Toward things only approachable by negation and paradox.

As above, so below

T.S.Eliot
“We had the experience but missed the meaning,
And approach to the meaning restores the experience
In a different form,
beyond any meaning”

Yan Liang is a Montreal-based composer with an additional academic background in Religious Studies and Ritual Research.
Moving across chamber music, electroacoustic composition, and interdisciplinary forms, her practice is drawn to different states of transmutation.

She believes inspiration comes from unique literary and spiritual personal experiences, and things that are only approachable by negation and paradox.
Those are often woven into her music as symbolic events, hidden threads or undercurrents, by timbral manipulation, a shifting perceptual center, rich and subtle details, with the games on perceptual thresholds.

Her most frequently performed works belong to her Nigredo series,
An ongoing cycle named after the blackening stage of medieval alchemy, across the cycle, different musical situations become symbolic states, rarely in a dramatic way, as she believes the most important phase of transmutation occurs mostly in a subtle and restrained manner.

Don't be afraid to claim mysticism,
for to write music is to say what words can't yet reach, reach where touch can't go, go where no one has set foot on.

Nothing reassures like giving in to woe
In silent bleeding,
restrained movements,
transmutation snails on
Don't be afraid to claim mysticism.
